Terms & Conditions

Libraries Tararua offers free membership to all those who live in, or pay rates for property, in Tararua District. Those who reside outside the district pay a small fee for full membership.

To become a member, you must acknowledge and agree to the following terms and conditions.

  1. You are responsible for your library card and all items checked out on your card.
  2. Members can borrow items free of charge, with the exception of items in rental collections which may incur a fee. These items are clearly identified.
  3. Members can renew items up to a maximum of twice, unless someone has a hold on it, or unless it's part of a special collection or per your membership type (see FAQs).
  4. Notify the library immediately if your library card is lost or stolen so that we can block unauthorized useReplacement cards are free but ID may be required.
  5. Members are not charged overdue fees.  Please return items by due dates as it may be on hold.
  6. Contact the library as soon as possible if you notice an error with your library membership account (e.g. you get an overdue reminder but you returned it already).
  7. Pay replacement costs for lost or damaged items. You are unable to borrow items if you have more than $5.00 in charges owing.
    1. Item/s are considered lost after 4 weeks of being overdue. The item/s will be invoiced at a fee that reflects the purchase price of the item, plus a non-refundable $5 administration fee.
    2. Return borrowed items in good condition. Any damaged item/s will be invoiced the purchase price.
  8. Adult members who are guarantors for  Junior or Teen members are responsible for their library use and all items borrowed, the content of materials chosen and/or viewed, and any charges incurred.
  9. The library sends notifications to advise of overdue items or holds to collect. We do not accept responsibility for messages not received or read, or interception of such.
  10. Notify the library of any change of address, phone number or email for yourself, and any members for whom you are guarantor.
  11. Every two years, a member's privilege will expire*. Members will receive an email prompting them to confirm their contact details to keep the membership active, or be advised when they next use the library. (If you have not used your library card for more than three years, your membership will be deleted, and all files discarded as per the Privacy Act). *Digital membership lasts one year.

Please remember to bring your library card on each visit - please don't be offended if ID is requested if you don't have your card.  Remember, you can download our app which shows your library membership number.

We ask all visitors to our libraries to treat them, and each other, with courtesy and respect. Our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for everyone - people who display behaviour opposite to this may be asked to leave.

Please be aware that security cameras are in operation in our spaces.

By completing an application for membership, you are providing personal information to Libraries Tararua, a division of Tararua District Council.

By law, you are not required to provide personal information. However, if you do not supply the information requested on the application, then Libraries Tararua  may be unable to process your application or provide you with membership

Membership details and stored documentation are confidential in accordance with the Privacy Act. This information is securely stored by the Tararua District Council’s database and with our digital service providers to enable accurate records to be maintained as to the identity and contact details of library members, and for statistical purposes to record the use of library material. Our agreements with digital service providers protect the information that we collect from any unauthorised use.

You have the right to access your information and request changes.

You agree that Libraries Tararua may use this information for the purpose of:

  • Managing your membership, including maintaining your records
  • Advising of fees
  • Recovering out-standing debts
  • Advising you of library services and events
  • Discussing with your guarantor or legal guardian any matters arising from your membership (if you are under 18 years of age)

The information may be given to appropriate Council departments and staff and/or third parties in the event that the Tararua District Council has to take action against you for recovery of any payments due and owing by you to Council in respect of your library membership.

The information may be shared with third parties when we believe in good faith that we are required to do so by law.

You agree that you may be contacted by post, email or telephone, and the Tararua District Council will not be liable for any other person being able to access any messages.

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure but you can also help to protect the privacy of your personal information by keeping your passwords secret and by ensuring that you log out of the website when you have completed your transaction.  If you become aware of any security breach, please contact Libraries Tararua as soon as possible.

This Privacy Policy only relates to our library sites.  Our website may contain links to other sites.  You should check their privacy policies before providing personally identifiable information to them or any other third party.
